A SENSORY CELEBRATION
The Exmouth Shire hosted a vibrant sensory play day at Federation Park to commemorate Children's Week on Tuesday 22 October 2024. The event in honour of Children’s Week provided a colourful and engaging experience for the town’s youngsters, offering opportunities for music, storytelling, tactile exploration, and imaginative play. A chance to get colourful, messy and wonderfully immerse themselves and make new connections.
Shire President Matt Niikkula emphasised the importance of Children's Week in creating inclusive and enjoyable experiences for children of all ages and highlighted that raising children in a remote and isolated town can pose its unique challenges. He acknowledged that families often have fewer opportunities, facilities, and services available to them compared to those that children in cities may have regular access to. He also reiterated the Shire’s commitment to providing more accessible and engaging opportunities for children and families.
The carefully crafted sensory play celebration had no shortage of fun activities with musical instruments, squishy, bubbly, and sandy textures, lots of sparkles, healthy snacks to keep the little busy bodies fuelled and a cosy story time corner to settle down and connect.
Amidst the snow and bubbles cascading through the air volunteers, parents and Shire staff came together to shine a spotlight one Exmouth’s little ones and celebrate the future generations of our town.
The abundance of sensory stations had small hands getting stuck into all sorts of textures, colours and sounds much to both the younger participants delight and highlighted an evident event success!
The Shire would like to express its gratitude to the event sponsors: Woodside Energy, Mitsui E&P Australia Ltd, LotteryWest, Exmouth Early Learning Centre, Department of Communities, Fuel to Go & Play, and HealthWay. Additionally, the Shire thanks the volunteers from Exmouth Toy Library, Lil’ Squids, Exmouth Playgroup WA, and the Exmouth Early Years Network for their invaluable contributions.
COMMENTS ATTRIBUTED TO THE SHIRE – SHIRE PRESIDENT MATT NIIKKULA
“The Shire is proud to be developing initiatives and better access for our community’s children and families to come together; get outside, play and discover with one another. The whole day showcased the importance of creating enriching play opportunities through hands-on exploration and fun learning environments and ties in with some of our community’s recent initiatives like Recreational Precinct Redevelopment and establishment of the new Early Learning Centre.”
“The event showcased the significance of enriching play experiences and hands-on learning. The abundance of sensory stations encouraged exploration, creativity, and social interaction, and I truly enjoyed being part of the event, where volunteers, parents and Shire staff came together to shine a spotlight on Exmouth’s smallest community members. To celebrate the future generations of our town.”
